North West Leicestershire District Council formally announced today that it was proposing to provide £430k to Social Housing Landlord - East Midlands Housing Group to build social housing on the derelict Pick and Shovel site in Coalville Town Centre.
I am pleased at last that something positive is being done to clean up the eyesore. We must welcome the positive provision for housing for social rent. More people living in the Town Centre will bring more trade to our town centre businesses.
But I share the scepticism of many residents. We have heard their grand plans before and nothing has happened. There are many hurdles to jump on the way from East Midlands Housing actually getting the additional finance from Government through to gaining Planning Permission.
The site belongs to a local private owner and I am aware that other business people tried to buy and redevelop the derelict site. All chances to redevelop the site have failed for a number of reasons including trying to provide car parking for new residents.
I and my Labour colleagues sincerely hope that with the cooperation of adjoining landowners and County Highways all problems can be resolved, and we do actually see a bright future for this site.
