A Leisurely New Year?

Hermiitage_Leisure_Centre_200_150.jpgAfter so much financial doom and gloom, residents of Coalville might be pleased to hear that NWLDC are investing in the town centre. Whitwick Parish Council were first to be consulted on the proposal to build a new Leisure Centre on Bridge Road car park.

The cost to build would be £18 million which NWLDC would borrow. The new facility would be run by ‘Leisure Trust’ contracted to NWLDC at ‘zero cost to the council’. The projected saving would be used to pay off the loans. Whitwick residents were told the playing fields and lake would remain, but the site of the existing Hermitage Leisure Centre buildings and car parks would be sold to developers for housing.

The ‘do-nothing’ option is to retain the staff and refurbish the Hermitage Leisure Centre at an estimated cost of £3million. The ruling cabinet at NWLDC will probably make this decision in February 2017.

I have doubts about the robustness of the business case which is currently being scrutinised by a cross-party working group. If you wish to comment on the proposals contact your District Councillor.
